Just
came across this site, excellent!!. I first saw an XCR-30
when I was working on a project in Calgary. I couldn't believe
the accuracy and ease of use (I first started off as an SWL
when I was very young using a Hammarlund HQ-100AC.
Unfortunately, there was no way to easily calibrate the receiver).
When I returned to Montreal I bought the XCR from Payette
Radio on St James St. It worked like a charm. The attached
photos show my 1985 ham setup VE2BOT during the day (I am
now VE3PKC), and an evening shot where you can see the trusty
XCR in the rear!
One problem I had with my XCR was static electricity. In
Canada during the winter months it gets very dry. One day
I crossed the carpet and grounded myself inadvertently on
the antenna of the XCR.
I had the XCR connected to earth ground.
The high voltage blew up a bunch of transistors. Since the
transistors were of the BC/BCF variety and not 2N types, it
took we awhile to round up replacements. With little test
equipment I eventually managed to repair the unit, following
the schematic in the manual. As I recall, the manual was excellent.
I left Montreal and moved to Toronto. Several years later
I was forced to sell a bunch of equipment to get some cash
to work on a new project. At that time I sold the BW. It went
the first day I put the ad in the Toronto Star. (Click to

Italian BW fan have just buyed this set from a Holland's owner,
had sent me this pic of this strange "leather cover"
(evidently selfmade) for his Barlow Wadley...Holland (from
where set came) weather is so wet? ;-) (Click to enlarge).

Official Magazine dedicated an article about this site in
last September 2002. Many thanks for the good notes from Maurizio
Bartolino! (Click to enlarge).
In
this picture you can see the MIRAMO DCR-30 Digital Meter
used to give to BW a semi-digital readout. It only read
the
0-999 Khz portion of frequency, leaving the direct readout
to the Mhz's segments.

Hello
friends, I am Paul Wetterhahn, located NW of Chicago and
always wanted one of these, we now have 3.
The two standard units perform poorly, but the FM unit's
AM is very hot. I am sure someone knows the secrets to fix
the poor performance. Please enjoy the side by side photo
taken April 2004. Visit our museum site: http://www.grundigsw.com
Many radios from all over the world! Thanks and good collecting,
